New Zealand

AA Travel PDA website

New Zealand is fortunate to have a wide variety of accommodation choices including upmarket hotels, exclusive sporting retreats and resorts, country pubs, motels with self-catering facilities, campsites, holiday parks and backpacker hostels. Whatever standard you seek, there is a price and quality to suit. Accommodation is often booked out in popular holiday seasons and it is wise to book ahead for such peak times. Accommodation options within this website have been divided into 5 categories.

  Hotel category

Boutique Hotel, Hotel, Lodge, Motor Inn
Hotels of world-class standard are found in major cities, leading provincial and resort areas. They have bar and restaurant facilities. Rooms have phone and TV, toilet and bath/shower facilities and usually have tea/coffee-making facilities. Country hotels and pubs offer clean pleasant rooms, sometimes in modernised historic buildings from around $40 per person. All properties in this website feature accommodation, but 'hotel' and 'pub' can also refer to taverns without accommodation. Some sporting lodges and upmarket resorts offer exclusive hideaway locations with top-class facilities.

  Self-Contained & Serviced category

Apartment, Cottages, Holiday Home, Motel/Motor Lodge, Self Catering, Serviced Apartment
Motels are a popular form of accommodation for travellers, especially as most units offer self-catering facilities. They also have phone, TV, tea/coffee-making facilities, private bath/shower and toilet facilities. They have made-up beds with all bedding supplied, and car parking. A studio is a 1-room unit where guests sleep in the lounge area. 1, 2 and 3-bedroom units have separate bedrooms in addition to the lounge area - which sometimes have bed-settees for additional sleeping. Breakfast (at extra cost) can usually be ordered the previous night for delivery to the unit if required.

  Guest & Hosted category

Bed & Breakfast, Farmstay, Guest House, Homestay
Guest houses may sometimes be in restored older buildings; however not all include breakfast in their room rate. The term 'private' hotel, now infrequently used, refers to one without a liquor licence. Homestay and farmstay accommodation is available in family homes, though sometimes guests may stay in a separate annex or cottage. Bathroom facilities may be private or shared. Guests may share home-cooked meals with their hosts; breakfast is usually included in the tariff, and dinner by arrangement at an additional cost. Prices vary, but on average between $80-$150 for 2 persons. Farmstay options often offer the chance to participate in farming life.

  Holiday Park category

Holiday Park, Camping Ground
Holiday Accommodation Parks, sometimes referred to as motor camps, are found in towns, resorts and rural areas, often near a natural or tourist attraction. Accommodation ranges from a tent site at approximately $10 per person to backpacker, lodges and park motels. Most holiday parks offer built accommodation with standard cabins or onsite caravans between $20 and $48 for 2 persons. They have central facilities for showers, toilets, cooking and laundry and most have recreational facilities such as playgrounds, TV and games rooms. For campervans and mobile homes, holiday parks offer security and protection for overnight stays. They provide access to waste and rubbish dump stations, laundry and toilet facilities. Many holiday parks also provide units with ensuite facilities and some are fully self-contained with TV, kitchen, bathroom and usually separate bedrooms.

  Backpackers category

Backpacker, Hostel
Backpacker hostels are generally independently owned where the emphasis is on getting travellers together. Most offer a mixture of shared rooms (dormitories) which may be single sex on request. Double, twin and single rooms are also available. Prices start at around $12 per person.
