Destinations - Lake Taupo-Tongariro Region

Snowy mountains, sparkling rivers lead into NZ's largest lake, thermal outlets where hot water steams &, above all, the lake & rivers all swarm with trout.

Find out about geothermal energy generation at Wairakei Geothermal Visitor Centre; take a geothermal walk in Taupo, discover active thermal areas with mud pools, craters, steam & geysers.

Thermal areas are found at Wairakei on the edge of Lake Taupo & S end of lake at Tokaanu.

Visit Huka Falls ; watch as over 200,000 litres of water tumble over the cliff face every second.

The rivers are famous for jet boating, white-water rafting, canoeing & kayaking. Other activities include bungy jumping, lake cruises, parasailing, gliding, helicopter & fixed-wing flights, skydiving, water skiing, mountain biking, 4-wheel bike rides, horse riding, windsurfing & yachting.

Tongariro National Park (a World Heritage site) includes 3 active volcanoes - Ruapehu, Tongariro & Ngauruhoe; & the popular ski fields of Whakapapa, Turoa & Tukino. In winter, venture up Mt Ruapehu for skiing, toboganning & snowball fights. Hunt for feral deer, pigs, goats, rabbits & possums in nearby forests.

Hike the Tongariro crossing & discover volcanic steam vents, lava formations & wildly coloured crater lakes.

Take a tour of a geothermal prawn farm; then move on to the restaurant for a meal of prawns.

Taupo offers unlimited potential to anglers at all levels of experience. Anglers require a Lake Taupo trout fishing licence, purchased for day, week or season from sporting goods stores, dairies, service stations, hotels/motels & visitor centres. Nearly all streams in district are restricted to fly fishing.

Check with local Department of Conservation, anglers or sporting goods' retailers to ensure you are fishing within the law.
