New Zealand Walking & Tramping
Tramping in NZ ranges from a brief walk to several days in "the bush´┐Ż & often involves hill or mountain climbs.

Don't enter the bush without planning - DOC or a sports store will tell you what you need. All hut tickets should be bought before embarking on your tramp.

Details from any DOC office. Tours, transport, accommodation are options in many parks. Permits/licences are needed for hunting/fishing. Enquire at a DOC office near the park.

Look After Yourself
Talk to park staff/read information guides. Leave details in intention books at visitor centres/ huts along the way. Treat/boil drinking water from rivers/ other natural sources before drinking.

DOC/tramping clubs provide sleeping/cooking facilities in huts about 5 hours' walk apart. Carry a tent as they may be full by the time you reach them. Hut charges & tickets must be purchased in advance. Book for Milford , Routeburn & Lake Waikaremoana Tracks. Contact DOC for details. Many guiding companies maintain lodges on the more popular tracks, for the exclusive use of their customers.

Walkways often cross private land varying in length from 1/2 hour wander to several days.

The Great Walks
9 Great Walks - 3 in North Island , 5 in South Island , 1 on Stewart Island . Wild scenery, basic facilities.

Other Popular Tramping Areas
Forest parks/protected areas offer walking/ tramping - easy, difficult. Contact DOC for advice/details.

Information on climbing, rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering should be obtained from professional guides, local clubs or DOC. The main locations- Tongariro National Park , Egmont National Park , & Southern Alps .

Mountain Biking
Mountain biking available in many locations. Contact i-SITEs, DOC, regional/local councils, local mountain bike clubs for details.
